Google to Take On Facebook
Posted by Nick O'Neill on September 21st, 2007 7:33 PMMichael Arrington has just posted about Google’s plans to launch a new social graph that takes on Facebook. On November 5 they are going to announce a new set of APIs that will tie into a new social layer across all of Google’s services. These services include Orkut, iGoogle, Gmail, Google Talk and other services. From the sounds of this, the aim is to provide access to all of Google’s social features. You thought Facebook’s platform was big news? This looks bigger.
Facebook currently requires all applications to reside within Facebook. Under this new system that Mike Arrington is discussing, developers would be able to push and pull information from the social graph. This almost sounds like Google’s attempt to completely open up the social aspect of the web, in turn owning the largest social graph on the net. If this really is going to happen, the entire web industry is about to be thrown in a whole new direction.
The concept of the social graph of the web becoming it’s own layer that anybody can tap in to is pretty phenomenal. I’m excited to see what Google has to announce on November 5th. This could be massive.

Facebook does not require applications to reside within Facebook. In fact, before they even announced their platform, they had an API for use on third party sites.

Google has much bigger plans. You should read the article that inspired Arrington’s post. Here is a write-up about it with links to it and a series of related articles:

[…] Call me a cynic, but there is a reason that more people are logging into Facebook everyday rather than Netvibes or competing startpages. That reason is friends. I want to see what’s going on with my friends, what they are looking at and who they are hanging out with. This is why I spend so much time on Facebook. My guess is that Google is going to be one of the first to offer this type of service via iGoogle and integration with their social layer that they are supposedly announcing next month. […]
