Social Network Advertising Is Hot
Posted by Nick O'Neill on August 15th, 2007 9:46 AMAccording to a PaidContent article from yesterday, SocialMedia.com has received $1 million in funding from a number of reputable VC firms. All I can say is that the advertising market on Facebook is pretty hot right now. As the other social networks begin to open up their platforms, this is going to become an increasingly hot market. I have written about a number of advertising platforms on Facebook and there are no signs of slowing. It’s a whole new landscape out there when companies are receiving significant funding to piggy back off of these other startups.
I find it particularly interesting that Google AdWords hasn’t entered the Facebook application advertising market yet. According to one of my contacts, Google’s involvement in the platform is prohibited by the terms of service. I haven’t seen anything to suggest this. Do you think Google will enter this market? All signs suggest that they want to own online advertising. Perhaps their agreement with MySpace would be a conflict of interest. I think they’ll definitely be there to be the premier advertising platform when MySpace launches. This is all speculation of course. Do you think Google will get involved?

…we just don't know whether anyone will make any money off of it.
All this hype over building apps and jamming ad boxes in it - we have no insight yet as to whether this is making or will make any money.

I think it's about time that social network advertising got on par with regular net advertising. Facebook is still an incredibly cheap way to monetize if you consider the number of page views you get.

One the first “intelligent” social network advertising players, appfuel.com, launched yesterday at “AppDevCon” in SF (FYI, the first 50 publishers to sign-up get to keep all the revenue they generate for 6 months; check appfuel.com for details).
With regards to AdSense, I've seen a few units on Facebook but they haven't been very popular, possibly because they are best for content rich sites, not interaction oriented applications as most popular Facebook apps tend to be; I think that's where dedicated players like appfuel come in, building smarter ad solutions for social platform environments.
