Widgets Getting More Ads?

Comscore Widget Ratings

Thanks to ComScore who is releasing a new program called “Widget Metrix.” Widget Metrix will monitor the reach of various widgets on the web. Max Levichin, CEO of Slide, believes that “the data from ComScore could begin to change” how widget developers earn money by “showing advertisers how widely distributed the content is” (Source: WSJ).

One part of the Wall Street Journal article seems to be inaccurate as well. Vauhini Vara states:

One big hurdle: These widget makers depend largely on MySpace and Facebook for their audience, and those two sites have so far been reluctant to let third-party companies include ads on their content in “profile” pages, where people post personal details, leave messages for friends and display photos.

Is Facebook really preventing people from placing ads within the widgets? While I haven’t seen any ads so far, is that a result of Facebook policy or have the widget developers refrained from including ads for the time being? While I don’t know the answer to this, it will be interesting to see how this manifests. As of now, I have seen ads on the application pages but not on the profile pages. It will be interesting to see how this evolves over the coming weeks and months.

I just recently placed ads on my Facebook App (Fantasy Stock Picking Game) to help pay for the bandwidth the game is using. Unlike most apps, mine has an extensive backend to it.

I read through the Developer TOS thoroughly before doing this and nowhere does it ban you from placing ads on the canvas or on user's profiles.

They do, obviously, reserve the right to remove your app at any time without warning and for no reason - so its best not to piss them off. Also, user's aren't going to keep your app installed if its all just advertisements.

Hope this helps!
