The Different Classes Among Social Networks

There are two classes: the Facebook class and the MySpace class. According to Danah Boyd’s new piece on “Viewing American class divisions through Facebook and MySpace” there are distinct class divisions between the people using MySpace and those that are on Facebook. Danah’s choice of words is fairly interesting. It almost sounds like MySpace is made up of people that are rejects of society.

MySpace is still home for Latino/Hispanic teens, immigrant teens, “burnouts,” “alternative kids,” “art fags,” punks, emos, goths, gangstas, queer kids, and other kids who didn’t play into the dominant high school popularity paradigm.

Conversely, Facebook is for those that are part of “hegemonic society.” Ultimately it is those families that emphasize education and going to college. I partially agree with what Danah Boyd has to say. I do agree that there is a certain stigma with those that are on MySpace but what is stopping MySpace users from going to Facebook? Facebook simply provides a better service hands down. Their photos/albums application is one of the best on the net. I understand the concept of “class differentiation” in high school and according to Danah Boyd the same thing is being played out on the web. I have heard this argument previously and I still partially agree. I think the lesson learned in all of this is that the community matters more than the features of a site, even in a Web 2.0 world.
