Facebook Friend Etiquette

So you just joined Facebook and immediately people start requesting you as a friend. What should you do if you don’t know them? How about if they are an ex that you really don’t want to talk to anymore? While there are many takes on the strength of a Facebook relationship, I like to keep my relationships pure. If I don’t know the person, I won’t approve them as a friend. One person that I spoke with last night had a pretty smooth way of being polite while discretely removing them as a contact. The easy way to politely decline a person as a friend is to first approve their friend request and then remove them as a friend a week later. This way the individual sees that you have approved their friendship and then they don’t get a notification when you remove them. It is the perfect way to discretely remove a connection! Do you think this is wrong? What is your take on Facebook friend etiquette?

I’m with you Nick. I don’t add people unless I know them. I don’t need to join the competition to have the most facebook friends when I can stay true to the friends I have on facebook. I’m not afraid to send people a message saying, “hey — do I know you?” and then just deny them if I don’t know them.

I personally don’t have a problem with just denying people, rather than adding then deleting them. I wouldn’t say it’s wrong, as many people are doing just that…but just not my way to play.

Good discussion!

If you delete a person, do they know. I`m wondering if it shows up in the mini-feeds.

Thanks for your help.

just googled ‘how to politely deny’ and i think you’re one of the first sites to come up!

My problem is with high school style, vague acquaintances - I want the words to say something more than ‘no’.

“gee that’s great you remember i was tall (e.g.)… i’m sorry though, I’m not comfortable sharing all my details with you.” .. shouldn’t you say something more than just deny? if not, they just request and request.
