Facebook Friend Etiquette
Posted by Nick O'Neill on June 9th, 2007 10:48 AMSo you just joined Facebook and immediately people start requesting you as a friend. What should you do if you don’t know them? How about if they are an ex that you really don’t want to talk to anymore? While there are many takes on the strength of a Facebook relationship, I like to keep my relationships pure. If I don’t know the person, I won’t approve them as a friend. One person that I spoke with last night had a pretty smooth way of being polite while discretely removing them as a contact. The easy way to politely decline a person as a friend is to first approve their friend request and then remove them as a friend a week later. This way the individual sees that you have approved their friendship and then they don’t get a notification when you remove them. It is the perfect way to discretely remove a connection! Do you think this is wrong? What is your take on Facebook friend etiquette?

I personally don't have a problem with just denying people, rather than adding then deleting them. I wouldn't say it's wrong, as many people are doing just that...but just not my way to play.
Good discussion!

My problem is with high school style, vague acquaintances - I want the words to say something more than 'no'.
"gee that's great you remember i was tall (e.g.)... i'm sorry though, I'm not comfortable sharing all my details with you." .. shouldn't you say something more than just deny? if not, they just request and request.
