Facebook Evolution

A pretty great Facebook movie that is a take on the popular Dove commercial.

Trakzor: The MyBlogLog of Facebook

Just this morning as I was leaving my house I was thinking that MyBlogLog should add their application to Facebook. Then I viewed Mike Jones’ (CEO of Userplane) profile on Facebook and noticed that there is already something like it. Once other users install Trakzor application to their Facebook you can view whenever they visit your profile. It is a pretty slick application. Add Trakzor to your Facebook now.

Should MySpace Have Seen This Coming?

While the new Facebook development platform was only announced last week, there was already a publicly available developer’s solution for months. The most recent step by Facebook was a logical extension of their existing offerings. While many weren’t expecting it to happen as quickly as it did, MySpace should have seen it coming, especially since it is their job to be monitoring the competition.

Will MySpace offer a competing service? My guess is yes, but the true question is whether or not it will be in time to outpace Facebook’s head start. Facebook is hoping to reach 50 million users by the year. While less than MySpace’s user base, it is fairly significant since the majority of users already visit the site on a daily basis. Conversely, MySpace is infamous for the massive number of false or spam accounts being generated by visitors. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Flickr Facebook Application in the Works

In the coming week it looks like a Flickr application is going to be launched for Facebook. While it may not be the one officially developed by Yahoo engineers, it should prove to be an effective tool for sharing your Flickr pics on Facebook. Chances are there will be no Photobucket application given that it is now owned by MySpace.  Still there are multiple picture utilities at the disposal of Facebook users. It will be interesting to see how the users make use of them. While they will provide direct competition to Facebook’s photos feature, chances are most users will stick to already built in features.

Facebook’s Insane Growth Rate

Facebook is growing like wildfire. According to an article released this morning, Facebook has shown a 90% increase in traffic since March! The runner up, Bebo, showed a 6% traffic increase. According to Trendcatching, Facebook is growing at a rate of 3% per week, which is 100,000 users per day! Additionally, a whopping 50% of Facebook users return to the site every day. Bottom line: Facebook is demolishing the competition. Another interesting note here is that according to articles I’ve read over the past few days, MySpace growth has become practically stagnant. MySpace has a couple weeks to rapidly adapt, otherwise they are going to be in serious trouble.

Facebook Profiles Are Public?

According to Fred Stuzman, “Facebook began exposing profiles to be indexed by Google.” While not completely public they are now accessible to Google. While they should probably have posted something about this in order to not shock the users when their profile starts showing up in Google, is it really that surprising? Ultimately Facebook is going to become the start page for many of its users. You will be able to view the latest news and potentially your bank account information directly from your Facebook page. While you will need to be logged in, in order to view your start page, it is a beginning of a new era for Facebook. The main difference here is that your Facebook page is not intended to be messed up aesthetically, nor is it intended to have all of the junk that is shown on MySpace profiles.

Obama Creates First Campaign Application

Barack Obama’s campaign has launched a Facebook application that:

puts the most recent campaign video and news on your profile and in front of your friends. It also enables you to easily communicate with your friends in early primary states where support for Barack is especially important.

I wonder what type of applications will rapidly follow suit.

Facebook: All Your Resources Belong to Us!

Sam Diaz has highlighted a common occurrence that took place over this past weekend, Facebook applications not responding as expected. None of these sites, not even The Washington Post was ready for the server overload that they experienced from the massive influx of users. The Washington Post experience 5-10 users per second while 30 Boxes added over 6,000 users on Sunday alone. This sounds oddly familiar like the Digg effect except it continues for days if not weeks on end.

iLike.com suffered the brunt of the Facebook effect. A whopping 46,000 users signed up in the first 20 hours. Pretty impressive considering they only play only a portion of each track you place on your profile. According to a post published on Venturebeat, iLike was desperately seeking 40 extra servers to borrow for the weekend. They should have given me a call because I have a couple hundred sitting in the back of my car. Either way, developers beware, you haven’t seen nothing until you have experienced the Facebook effect. The most amazing aspect of the Facebook effect is that it isn’t random like the Digg effect (although popularity is). Instead you are guaranteed a few thousand visitors just by adding your application. Pretty incredible!

I Need Bloggers!

Given that I am intending to make this blog the number one unofficial blog of Facebook, I am in need of more bloggers. Since I am starting this from scratch all I can offer currently is backlinks to your site (and a short bio at the bottom of each of your posts). If all goes well, I plan on hiring full-time bloggers in the coming months. If you are interested then email me ASAP at nick [at] allfacebook [dot] com. Thanks!

Amazon to Sell Books and Music on Facebook

One of the partnerships announced at Facebook’s news conference last week was a partnership with Amazon. Currently users can make a list of their favorite books and music. Imagine what will happen when users will not only see their friends that like the same music but will also be able to view the current price on their favorite products. This will be the first major introduction of commerce into social networking. Strong relationships have always been a source of referral sales, and now much of that can take place online. Soon enough we will see add-ons that allow you to:

  • Make custom wardrobes (e.g. “My Closet”) with links directly to a purchase page
  • Make recommendations on books
  • Recommend songs
  • General wish lists with links to products
  • More!

This is truly a revolution in online marketing. I am willing to bet that as a result of this integration of e-commerce and social networking, Facebook will account for a major percentage of all online transactions by the end of next year. Imagine when they decide to take a cut of all sales. They are looking at some serious revenue potential. This is only the forefront.
