1 Million Blackberries Download Facebook

According to Natasha Lomas, more than 1 million Blackberry users have downloaded the Facebook application since its launch five months ago. This is an impressive statistic but also highlights how niche this market is. I have been impressed with the Facebook Blackberry application so far but ultimately there are a few downfalls.

If I had to make an educated guess, I would say that there are probably more iPhone users accessing Facebook on a daily basis than the total number of users that have downloaded the Facebook Blackberry application. While 1 million users is no number to sneeze at, it is nothing compared to the millions of iPhone owners. It would be great to take a look at Blackberry social network statistics versus iPhone social networking stats.

I would love to see an updated version of the Facebook application that enables users to browse their friends’ profiles, appraove friend requests and synchronizes read and unread messages with the web based version. These are some great stats for Facebook though and it will be interesting to see if this growth continues in the coming months. My guess is that it will!

  1. I'm guessing that the popularity of Facebook on Blackberry with limited functionality may be partly due to companies blocking access to Facebook on the corporate network. Since Blackberries are outside the company network, people can check out Facebook while at work.Kind of ironic if true. The company giving you the tools to bypass their restrictions.

  2. I would definitely like to see an updated Facebook for Blackberry app, they should not allow it to stagnate. The iPhone may be picking up all the press coverage these days but RIM has still sold 20 million units (as per their Oct 2007 earnings call) to date. I'd guess I phone sales stand at 1/10th of that so I still think its worth development time!
